Alexandra Hamilton and Kathryne Jones of Ida Baker won the District 3A-11 No. 1 doubles title and will play in the state tournament.

Ida Baker held onto its slim lead to edge Southeast (Bradenton) for the District 3A-11 title on Thursday at Charlotte High School.  Bulldog juniors Kathryne Jones and Alexandra “Sasha” Hamilton earned a trip to states with a 6-4, 7-5 win over North Fort Myers at No. 1 doubles.

“I’m relieved all my hard work paid off again,” said Jones who made it to states in singles and doubles as a freshman. “I’ve wanted to get back to states and I’m happy to go there with Sasha. We’ve helped each other become better players.”

Hamilton, who won the No. 2 singles title too, is in her first year with the team after transferring from Oasis High School.

“I’m so proud of them and of the team,” said Claudia Cascione, in her 10th season as Baker’s tennis coach. “We have a lot of new players this year. They’ve fit in well and formed strong bonds and friendships.”

Baker will host a regional matchup next week against the winner of Friday’s District 3A-12 tiebreaker against Fort Myers and Barron Collier.

North Fort Myers’ Alexis Neumann is the District 3A-11 No. 1 singles champion.

“I had lost to her recently and was really nervous,” said Neumann, who joined the tennis team this year. She went to states as a freshman with the North cross country team.

The 3A state championship begins April 24 at Sanlando Park in Altomonte Springs.

The team district champion will be crowned after Friday’s 8 a.m. playoff at Three Oaks Park.

“We are tied with Barron Collier at 14 points each,” said Fort Myers coach Don Massey. “It will be pro sets with the first to four winning. I’m proud of my team for getting 14 points.”

If Fort Myers wins, they will host Southeast in region play next week. A loss would send the Green Wave to Ida Baker.
