THURSDAY

Palmetto Ridge 58, Lely 50: Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Palmetto Ridge boys basketball team had to dig deep against a gritty Lely defense.

The Trojans shut Palmetto Ridge down in the second quarter, and entered the locker room in command of the contest scoring 25 points in the period. However, Calven Charles and Iago Stanback weren't going to let that happen in the second half.

Charles scored a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds, while Stanback added 11 points and six boards, as Palmetto Ridge downed Lely 58-50 to win the inaugural Palmetto Ridge Holiday Hoops Tournament. In the final two quarters, Lely was outscored by more than two to one, 34-16.

"We made the adjustment to commit to protecting the paint and closing out harder on their shooters," Palmetto Ridge coach John Solak said. "Lely is known for high intense defense, and athleticism. What not a lot of people know about Lely, is they can hit those 3s as well. We wanted to prioritize closing out harder, and making those 3-point attempts more difficult for them."

Sean Gomez added 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists for Palmetto Ridge. Roy Obsaint had 16 points for Lely, which moves to 8-6 this season.

The Bears are Southwest Florida's only undefeated team remaining, and will enter 2023 with a perfect 9-0 record.
