Swimmer who drowned off Long Branch Sunday identified as New York state man

LONG BRANCH – The swimmer whose body was swept up on the beach in Long Branch on Sunday evening has been identified as a Ohio native who most recently resided in New York state.

Albert James Hendricks, 49, originally from Akron, Ohio, was swimming with a companion when they started to struggle shortly after 6:20 p.m., said Domingos Saldida, Long Branch director of public safety.

The woman with Hendricks was pulled from the water by a good Samaritan, Saldida said. Lifeguards showed up, but they could not find Hendricks.

The woman was taken to Monmouth Medical Center in the city where she was treated and released, he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Long Branch police, a New York Police Department helicopter unit and others joined the search.

Hendricks’ body washed up by Rooney's Oceanfront Restaurant on Ocean Avenue at 9:21 p.m.

No town of residence was available for the victim.
