Body of missing swimmer found near Rehoboth Beach

Bathers hit the waves just outside the Indian River Inlet at Delaware Seashore State Park as the sun sets, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023 during the unofficial end to summer, Labor Day Weekend.

A previous version of this story had the wrong age for the missing swimmer, as provided by Rehoboth Beach Fire Company Chief Chuck Snyder. According to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, the victim is 31 years old.

The body of a missing swimmer washed ashore just north of Rehoboth Beach on Monday morning.

Richard Boateng, a 31-year-old from Savage, Maryland, was last seen in the surf off Rehoboth Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department. When the 911 calls started to come in, lifeguards were off duty, but still nearby, according to Rehoboth Beach Fire Company Chief Chuck Snyder, so they began a line search.

The Coast Guard, Delaware State Police and Division of Fish and Wildlife all responded to assist with the search.

Boateng's body was spotted in the surf in North Shores, in the area of Farview Road, around 6 a.m., according to police. North Shores is a small community just north of Rehoboth, where President Joe Biden has a home.
