Swinging on the Susquehanna

Jul. 16—WILKES-BARRE — Friday night's kickoff of the Rockin' the River all-ages free concert series drew quite the crowd, as folks converged on Millennium Circle in the River Common on River Street to enjoy the show, local food and drink vendors and togetherness in the community.

Beginning at 5 p.m. with music starting at 6, attendees had a wide selection of food trucks to choose from. Eat Up Now, Tony Thomas Catering, Geraldo's Pizza, Udder Delites Ice Cream, the brand-new D's on Wheels, Yogi's Potato Pancakes, Cosenza's on the Go, Wilkes University's student-enterprised All Belgium Waffles, and Susquehanna Brewing Company were all on hand, ensuring folks stayed full and cool on a hot Friday evening.

By the time Teddy Young & The Rugged Individuals hit the stage at 6, things really heated up as a capacity crowd was anxiously waiting some good live tunes.

And the show-starters were more than happy to oblige. After remarks from Mayor George Brown, Visit Luzerne County Executive Director Alan K. Stout, County Councilwoman Kendra Radle and a representative from presenting sponsor Geisinger, the band launched into a Stevie Ray Vaughan-esque set complete with slide guitar and fiery licks.

Tom Malloy, a native of the East End section of Wilkes-Barre, now residing in Laflin, was in attendance with his wife, Samantha, and their 1-year-old daughter Mackenzie.

"I think it's very important to bring people back together and experience a little culture and bring life to a great city," Malloy said of the event.

Mackenzie declined comment as she eyed up the food vendors in the distance.

After the opening set, The Idol Kings, one of country's premier tributes to Journey, took to the stage and was followed by Danny V's 52nd Street Band, a Billy Joel Tribute, rounding out a talented line up that brought smiles and life to the crowd.

There's two more chances to get out and enjoy the Rockin' the River free concert series at Millennium Circle, 92 N. River St. in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

Next Friday, July 22, will see music from Tori V & The Karma, Dustin Douglas & The Electric Gentlemen and The Taxmen — a Beatles tribute. The following week, July 29, will see Mike Miz & The Northeast Extension, Southside Five and Cabinet.

Admission is free for the whole family.
