Swisher International is all about flavor in latest upgrade at Jacksonville cigar facility

Swisher International Inc. will see an upgrade to its cigar-making and tobacco facilities just north of downtown Jacksonville.

The manufacturer at 459 E. 16th St. will be converting a 960-square-foot area into a “flavor room."

City building inspectors recently approved the permits for the project estimated to cost $882,750. SDS Construction LLC is the contractor.

Swisher did not respond to requests for more information about the new room.

The international cigar company traces back to 1861. But in 1923 the family selected Jacksonville when looking for a new home for their growing business due to the area’s climate, shipping facilities and proximity to raw materials and markets, according to the company's website. Swisher has been headquartered in Jacksonville ever since.

Tractor Supply store to get additions

An agricultural supply store in Jacksonville will soon be getting a sizeable addition to a side lot.

The Tractor Supply Co. store at 9025 New Kings Road will be adding 5,598 square feet to include a new greenhouse and feed storage area.

The project will cost about $500,000, according to building permit documents approved by the city. Menemsha Development Group Inc. is the contractor.
