Sybert heads to National History Day competition

Jun. 25—Collin Sybert, the son of Jeremy and Lynnete Sybert of Rosendale, Missouri, is a sixth-grade student at North Andrew and earned first place at the state competition for National History Day in Missouri in the junior individual performance category. This year's theme was "Diplomacy and Debate in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences."

When asked why he chose to do a performance titled "United States Policies Concerning Native Americans in Between the 18th and 19th Centuries," Collin replied: "I became interested in the status of the Native Americans when various school districts and professional teams were faced with the issue of changing their Native American derived mascots. The more I read and listened, the more I became involved in learning about the treaties signed between the Native Americans and the U.S. Government. The incidents led up to broken treaties and consequences, including the failures and successes related to what the U.S. government called the 'Indian Problem.' I felt this would fit the theme for the year perfectly."

Collin will represent Missouri and compete with other state winners in grades six through 12 virtually this month.
