Syracuse freshman on skateboard dies after collision with university trolley
A freshman student at Syracuse University died this week following a collision with a trolley close to the school.
First-year student Trevor Daley Pierce, 18, was pronounced dead Tuesday at Upstate University Hospital following an accident that occurred earlier in the evening, Dean of Students Marianne Thompson notified students and faculty in an email that night.
Pierce, of Jaffrey, New Hampshire, was a member of the Renée Crown University Honors Program and was studying political philosophy.
Pierce was skateboarding Tuesday when he collided with the trolley, which transports university students, Syracuse.com reports. The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. and resulted in an intersection being shut down.
The outlet noted that blood was visible in the street, while the skateboard was found on the sidewalk with an evidence marker next to it.
Authorities are reviewing camera footage and witness statements concerning the fatal accident.
“Trevor will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” wrote Thompson. “This is an unthinkable loss for Trevor’s family, friends and loved ones and the entire Syracuse University community. Please join me, Chancellor Kent Syverud and our Orange family in extending our deepest sympathy and condolences to all who knew and loved Trevor. We send our support, thoughts and prayers to everyone grieving and impacted by Trevor’s death.”
Thompson also provided information for students seeking out counseling.
A memorial has since been established at the crash site.
