Syrian salsa teacher coaches online during lockdown
Teaching salsa solo
Syrian dancing coach Aline Srouji
Location: Damascus
has been doing online tutorials
free of charge for her students
after her studio was forced to close down
due to social distancing measures
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SALSA COACH, ALINE SROUJI, SAYING:"Unfortunately, we had to close down. But we didn't want to lose everything we had been building up for a long time. So we decided to do something from home and encourage people to dance, put efforts into improving their talents while at home."
But one of Srouji's students
finds dancing salsa alone quite challenging
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DANCE STUDENT, SANDY KARWASHAN, SAYING: "Of course, you can't compare the two, dancing online and being in the studio. We would never have done this online if we had not been forced to. We always say over WhatsApp that we want to go back to the studio. Especially that you need a partner to dance the Salsa. You can't dance alone all the time, it is hard to create the energy you share with people."
