A system is forming over the Gulf of Mexico. Here's what that means for Florida weather
Heading to Florida soon? Thanks to a weather system over the Gulf of Mexico, heavy rainfall could impact your vacation.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami is tracking an area of showers and thunderstorms in the central Gulf of Mexico. Currently, environmental conditions appear only marginally favorable for the system to develop into something more severe as it travels over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but rain and storms could still land over portions of Florida.
Over the next 48 hours, the formation chance is low, around 10%, according to the National Hurricane Center. Over the next seven days, the formation chance also remains low, at around 20%.

However, the weather system could still produce heavy rainfall and gusty winds later this week, most likely over portions of the Florida Peninsula.

In an excessive rainfall outlook from the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center, areas of south and central Florida are under a marginal, or at least a 5% risk of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance.
Cities like Miami, Tampa and Orlando are included under this marginal risk.
In Miami, showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday through Friday night, with a chance of showers and storms continuing through next Tuesday.
National Weather Service forecasts in Tampa and Orlando are similar, with showers, storms and high winds possible through the end of this week and over the weekend.
