T.J. Maxx holds grand opening at Fairlane Village mall near Pottsville

Oct. 17—POTTSVILLE — The newly opened T.J. Maxx was abuzz with excitement Sunday as customers shopped for clothing, housewares and other items at the off-price retailer.

Located at the former site of Brother's Buffet at Fairlane Village mall, the store drew scores of customers on its opening day, with shoppers browsing through the extensive selection.

Many of the shoppers were familiar with T.J. Maxx and had wanted to turn out for the grand opening of the new location.

"It's the first T.J. Maxx in Schuylkill County," said Hannah Morgan, of Pine Grove, "and that's, like, the most exciting thing ever."

Morgan, who describes herself as a "big bargain shopper" and a thrift store enthusiast, enjoys the store's pet section and home options, in particular.

"It's great to see Pottsville getting built up. ... We totally need it," she said.

Construction crews had begun to work on the store in January and had planned to open it in August.

However, supply chain problems and workers' vacations delayed the opening, according to Rocco Aruzzo, regional manager for Lexington Realty, the mall's owner.

Alec Gonzalez, of Pottsville, said he could not pass up the opportunity to attend the store's opening day.

"I love T.J. Maxx," he said. "They seem to be running it really well, with how many people are here."

Founded in 1976, T.J. Maxx is based in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is an off-price retailer, known for selling men's, women's and children's clothing, along with shoes, toys, beauty accessories, furniture and kitchen utensils.

Customers flocked to every part of the store Sunday to shop for the wares, while store associates were on hand to assist shoppers and keep things running smoothly. Many customers received free reusable bags upon checkout.

"It's nice to have one here," said Deb Schreffler, of New Philadelphia. "They always have really nice things."

Schreffler said her usual buys from the store include kitchen utensils, winter apparel and supplies for her dog.

Stasia Hull, of Pottsville, shops at the T.J. Maxx near Reading, so she was happy to hear about the new location.

Her first haul from the new store included a frying pan and some treats for her granddog.

"I just came out to look around today," she said.

Gonzalez said he enjoys seeing new storefronts and businesses settle in the area.

"I like a good deal," he added.
