T-Mobile brings 25-foot Lite Brite display to Adel to celebrate completion of Rotary Plaza

The switch was flipped on T-Mobile’s 25-foot Lite Brite display Saturday morning in Adel.

The display started in Los Fresnos, Texas on Nov. 30 before traveling to Murray, Kentucky on Dec. 2 and ending in Adel on Dec. 10.

“We visited towns that had recently completed their T-Mobile Hometown Grant project to celebrate and commemorate the completed project with the community,” said Danielle Babbington, T-Mobile PR & Corporate Communications.

Saturday’s visit to Adel was to help celebrate the completion of the Rotary Plaza renovations. The project included removing and replacing the concrete in the space formerly known as Pedal Plaza, located near the Raccoon River Valley Trail. Benches, an archway and some interactive musical flowers were also added.

“I’m so happy that everybody could come out today and celebrate our partnership between the city of Adel, the Adel Rotary Club and the Adel Chamber for Rotary Plaza,” said Shirley McAdon, mayor pro tem, Rotarian and Adel Chamber board member. “Rotary Plaza will be the 100th year project for Adel Rotary, which will be celebrated in May 2024 so you can tell we’re way ahead of schedule. The reason is T-Mobile’s grant.”

The plaza improvement project, a joint effort between the Adel Partners Trail Committee and Adel Rotary, received $41,566 through T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant program.

"T-Mobile is committing up to $25 million through 2026 to support small towns across America by funding community projects,” Babbington said. “The T-Mobile Hometown Grants program will help fund projects to build, rebuild, or refresh community spaces that help foster local connections in the town.”

Rebecca Hillmer, with the Adel Trails Committee, said T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant allowed the groups to “dream even bigger” for the Rotary Plaza improvements. That included expanding the concrete footprint, adding a brick impression to honor Adel’s history of brick manufacturing and adding custom artwork.

McAdon added that landscaping will be added next year and everyone will be invited back for the Adel Rotary’s 100th year celebration in May 2024.

Though first Deb Bengtson, president of Adel Partners Chamber, helped flip the switch on T-Mobile’s 25-foot Lite Brite display.

“We’re super excited to be here for the completion of the project and to light this big display,” T-Mobile Territory Manager Gary Meier said on Saturday morning.
