T.R. Shaw Jr. appointed to KCC Board of Trustees

BATTLE CREEK — Battle Creek native T.R. Shaw Jr. has been appointed to temporarily fill a vacant seat on the Kellogg Community College Board of Trustees.

Shaw’s appointment to the vacant seat comes on the heels of the departure of Jonathan Byrd, who resigned from the board in April amid allegations of sexual assault. Attorney General Dana Nessel is reviewing the case.

Shaw's appointment is effective until the general election of November 2024, at which time voters will decide who will fill the remainder of the six-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2026. Shaw was one of 12 applicants for the trustee vacancy, college officials said.

Board of Trustees Chair Steve Claywell believes Shaw will be an asset to the board, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge.

“T.R. Shaw has demonstrated throughout his career that he is a committed advocate for the region and friend of Kellogg Community College,” Claywell said in a release. “The Board of Trustees is eager to welcome him to the team.”

Shaw attended KCC as an advanced standing student from Battle Creek Central High School, graduating in 1978. He holds a bachelor of applied arts degree from Central Michigan University and a certificate in mortuary science from Wayne State University.

Shaw is a retired funeral director and former owner of Shaw Funeral Homes. He served on the board of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association, representing Southwest Michigan, and in the U.S. Navy after college. He retired from the Navy Reserve as a public affairs officer at the rank of lieutenant commander.

Shaw served several years on the Lakeview Downtown Development Authority and currently serves on the Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field Advisory Board. He is a director emeritus of the Battle Creek Community Foundation and the Brass Band of Battle Creek; a charter member of Cereal City Sunrise Rotary Club; and is active with American Business Clubs, Boy Scouts and on the board of the Battle Creek Regional History Museum.

Shaw is also a published author, speaker, freelance writer and editorial contributor to many publications. He is married to Kathy (Banfield) Shaw, a native of Marshall.
