Türkiye warns Russia about escalating shipping in the Black Sea

Türkiye has discussed with Russia the incident with the Sukru Okan cargo ship, which was detained by the Russian military over the weekend, and warned against attempts to escalate in the Black Sea.

Details: The DMM’s report concerned the refutation of reports of an alleged "attack by the Russian military on a Turkish ship". They explained that the incident with Sukru Okan occurred in international waters, and the ship, although belonging to a Turkish company, was under the flag of Panama.

"Despite all this, after the interference in the ship's movement, the interlocutors in the Russian Federation were duly warned to avoid such attempts to escalate tensions in the Black Sea," the Turkish administration added.

  • The Russian Defence Ministry said that on the morning of 13 August, a Russian ship opened "warning" fire on the Sukru Okan, a bulk carrier that was heading for the port of Izmail in Odesa Oblast, Ukraine, under the flag of Palau, when the ship did not respond to the demands of the Russians to stop for inspection. The incident took place in the Black Sea.
