Acclaimed author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates is going up, up and away in a new medium and with an iconic superhero.

Warner Bros. announced Friday that Coates has been tapped to write a new Superman film produced by J.J. Abrams. The news was first reported by entertainment website Shadow and Act.

Coates, whose books include “Between the World and Me,” “The Beautiful Struggle” and “We Were Eight Years in Power," is no stranger to the superhero game: He's recently written "Black Panther" and "Captain America" series for Marvel Comics.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates’s ‘Between the World and Me’ opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “We’re confident that his take on Superman will give fans a new and exciting way to see the Man of Steel.”

In a statement, Coates called it "an honor” to be invited into the DC Comics world. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”

No director or star has been announced for the project, which is early in development. Most recently, Henry Cavill played the Man of Steel in two Zack Snyder Superman movies as well as "Justice League"– Cavill stars in Snyder's director's cut of the latter streaming on HBO Max March 18. Other Superman actors include the late Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin, who currently plays the character on CW's new "Superman & Lois" TV series.

“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told,” Abrams said. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen.”
