Table Talk Pies facility in Shrewsbury hit by smoky oven fire

SHREWSBURY — A fire in a large oven at the Table Talk Pies plant on Bowditch Street prompted several workers to evacuate the building Wednesday.

Firefighters from four surrounding towns provided mutual aid. One Shrewsbury firefighter was brought to the hospital, Fire Chief Jim Vuona said.

The fire, reported about noon, was contained to a 60-foot oven, the chief said.

"The biggest problem was getting all the smoke out after," Vuona said.

The firefighter that was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester had signs of heat exhaustion, Vuona said.

"We had to shut off the gas and power and we're in the process of working with the ownership and management team to restore everything," Vuona said. "They'll be back up and operating within the next couple days or so."
