Tackett attends Buckeye Girls State

ZANESVILLE — Lania K. Tackett was a recent delegate to Buckeye Girls State as selected and supported by the American Legion Auxiliary of Roseville.

Buckeye Girls State is a week-long program focused on the education of younger women about the rights, responsibilities, work and more of Ohio government. Delegates learn about city, county and state governments along with positions and politics that go with those categories. The program teaches leadership, systems of government and pride in one's community and country.

For the beginning three days, there are rallies and Caucasus for city, county and state for each party of Buckeye Girls State. There is also a recreation period each day for an hour where participants can campaign or just hang out with friends. There are elections after the first three days and government functions start for each city, county and state.

Each night there is a city meeting where the day is recapped and the next day is discussed. In Tackett's city, there was a poem or speech that someone read each night to inspire and show appreciation to each other and Buckeye Girls State.

Tackett and her roommate created a business for their city, Baby Monkeys Banana Bar, which included them filing taxes, applying for a lease and getting a vendor's license. She was also on the city board of education for the Federalist Party, board of elections and was a member of the city board of health.

Tackett said her favorite part was meeting new people and making friends.

"I was very nervous about going and meeting new people, but I’m so glad I attended and I would do it again if I could," she said. "It’s a fun and enjoyable time whether government is your thing or not."
