The “Taco Tuesday” trademark is officially free, and Taco Bell is celebrating with free tacos for all.

Customers can get a free Doritos Locos Tacos every Tuesday at participating U.S. restaurants through Sept. 12, the taco chain announced in a news release.

No purchase is necessary.

The offer is available in-store and online Aug. 15, Aug. 22, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, while supplies last, the release said. There are a few exclusions, however.

The free beef Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos are limited to one per person, per day, according to the restaurant. Delivery orders also excluded unless orders are placed on the Taco Bell app, and an offer code is required.

‘Taco Tuesday belongs to all’

A trademark battle over the alliterative phrase ended in a truce in June when the Wyoming-based Taco John’s dropped its trademark registration laying claim to the phrase, Forbes reported.

The retreat came after Taco Bell put up a fight of its own, filing legal petitions to end the trademark and “liberate Taco Tuesday,” according to the outlet.

“Taco Tuesday belongs to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos,” Taylor Montgomery, chief marketing officer for Taco Bell U.S., said in a statement.

“And this Free-For-All will not only thank taco fans who supported the cause, but will also spotlight local restaurants and vendors who can now embrace Taco Tuesdays without fear of legal action,” Montgomery continued.

The taco chain said it will team up with DoorDash on Tuesday, Sept. 12, to help pay for fans’ Taco Tuesday orders at participating vendors serving up Mexican cuisine, according to the release.

The offer will be available in all 49 states where the Taco Tuesday trademark was canceled, excluding New Jersey, the restaurant said.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
