Tacos, dancing and family fun: Attending Fiesta Topeka is an all-around win for the city

It’s almost time for Fiesta Topeka and we’re excited. We hope to see you there.

The 90-year tradition formerly known as Fiesta Mexicana is a Topeka classic that celebrates Mexican culture, traditions and cuisine while also raising funds for Holy Family Catholic School.

The theme is "A Legacy of Pride, Passion & Culture." This year's event marks the 90th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe's first fiesta, a one-day event held at the height of the Great Depression in August 1933. The fiesta is planned and operated by parish and community volunteers.

This is a great family-friendly event that supports education for our local children.

The Topeka Capital-Journal’s Tim Hrenchir reports the Fiesta has made some changes this year beyond a new name. For the first time, this year's fiesta will include a pickleball tournament. It's also the first fiesta to offer cornhole tournaments.

We’re excited to see what comes of these changes. They seem like a great way to include the greater Topeka community. While faith is a central element of this festival, it’s clear that this is a community event and all are welcome.

We’re also excited to see people come together. The most popular event, the festival, will run from Tuesday, July 18, through Saturday, July 22. Food lines open at 4 p.m. each day. Festivities end at 11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and at midnight on Saturday. There’s also a carnival, a kids corner, a parade on Saturday and a coronation ball. Literally something for everyone. Be sure to mark it on your calendar.

Most importantly we’re excited for the food. Tamales, burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, tacos and more make the fiesta a destination. Be sure to stop in and sample traditional offerings. It’s all very affordable and again goes to supporting school children. Finally, we’re also excited to see what these funds can do for the students of Holy Family Catholic School. Who doesn’t want to see our youths be successful? Spending a few bucks on some tacos can make that happen. Seems like a win-win.
