Taiwan reaches 200 days without local coronavirus case

It has now been 200 days since Taiwan last recorded a domestic case of coronavirus, prompting local health officials to thank the public for participating in efforts to curb the spread.

The island is, however, still experiencing cases of COVID-19 among people traveling into Taiwan from other places.

Taiwan, which has only registered 553 confirmed coronavirus cases and seven deaths overall, acted quickly to introduce numerous guidelines aimed toward preventing the spread. On Jan. 23, Taiwan suspended flights from Wuhan, China, where the first case of COVID-19 was observed.

The island also enforced a 14-day quarantine period for all travelers entering Taiwan, and has emphasized the importance of wearing masks.

Although the last local case was recorded by on April 12, journalists in Taiwan have tracked reports of people leaving the island and then testing positive elsewhere.

Japanese and Thai officials recently alerted authorities of three people who tested positive for COVID-19 after traveling out of Taiwan.

In Thursday’s announcement, personnel with Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control reiterated the significance of wearing masks and washing hands.
