Taiwan wins first-ever gold medal in badminton after defeating China's men’s doubles

Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin will go down in history as the men’s doubles team that won Taiwan’s first-ever gold medal in badminton at the Olympics.

What happened: Lee and Wang, both first-time Olympians, bested China’s third-seeded pair Liu Yuchen and Li Junhui at the Tokyo Games men’s double grand final held at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza on Saturday, according to Taipei Times.

• The Taiwanese badminton duo won the first match 21-18 and followed it by 21-12 to secure the win. The entire game lasted 34 minutes.

• Now in 17the place, Taiwan won 10 medals -- two golds, four silvers and four bronzes -- at the Tokyo Games as of Monday, as seen in the Olympics' medal ranking website.

• The duo now sits in third in the BWF World Ranking for men’s double, pushing Li and Liu down to fourth.

Other details: Lee and Wang were both born in Taipei and reside in Kaohsiung City, according to their BWF Badminton profiles.

• Lee’s father encouraged him to play badminton and began playing the sport in 2005 while still in primary school.

• Just like Lee, Wang’s parents also encouraged him to take up badminton. He started playing at the age of 9 in 2004 and later became interested in the sport.

• Wang won the bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships in Nanjing, China.
