Takeaways from the weekend: North wins conference title; Mains celebrates milestone

Although all of last week's area high school sporting events were postponed by recent inclement weather, there were still some big events held over the weekend for area athletes.

Topping the list were two big wrestling conference matches in town, with the Mountain 7 at North Henderson and the Mountain Foothills 7 at Hendersonville.

Here are three takeaways from those tournaments:

1. North Henderson wrestling takes Mountain 7 Conference title: North Henderson defended its home court with a team title in the Mountain 7 Conference tournament. The Knights finished with 183.5 points, and not far behind in the runner-up spot was county-rival East Henderson with 154 points. Pisgah was third with 146, with Franklin in fourth with 132. The only other area team competing was West Henderson, which finished in fifth spot with 115.5 points. Area wresters earning individual titles were Damon Landreth of West Henderson (120), Gunner Marshall of East Henderson (126), Mason Maybin of East Henderson (132), Robert Cleto of North Henderson (138), Ulises Vega DelaMora of North Henderson (152), Solomon Jenks of West Henderson (160) and Tucker Marshall of East Henderson (170).

2. Hendersonville's Mains celebrates wrestling milestone: At the Mountain Foothills Conference tournament at Hendersonville, Walker Mains got to celebrate surpassing a milestone at home. He earned his 100th career victory on Jan. 15 on the road, but on Saturday, he got to celebrate the milestone in front of his home crowd. He surpassed 100 wins with a victory in the 138-pound conference semifinals against Brevard's Avan Hinkle with a pin. He then got win No. 102 in with a pin against R-S Central's Hayden Snethen.

3. Hendersonville finishes third in Mountain Foothills 7: On their home court, the Bearcats were the top-finishing area wrestling team at the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference tournament. Hendersonville ended up in third place with 151 points. R-S Central took the title with 224.5 points, and Chase was runner-up with 157. The two other area teams were Brevard, which finished fourth with 143 points and Polk County, which finished sixth with 94. Area wresters earning individual titles were Collier Foster of Polk (132), Walker Mains of Hendersonville (138), Dennis Waters of Hendersonville (152), Jacob Stockton of Brevard (170), Alex Maximov of Hendersonville (195) and Jarek Stewart-Karolewics of Brevard (heavyweight).
