St. Clair County Community College isn’t looking for just anyone to take on the role of the college’s mascots, Skip and Lil’ Skip.

Vice President of Student Services Pete Lacey said they want someone who starts busting dance moves when “YMCA” starts playing at games.

SC4 Fieldhouse Operations Manager Bridget Barrett said they want someone who loves Skippers athletics and wants to enhance fans' game experience.

Student athletic success and outreach manager Craig Archer said they want someone who will take the role, put their personality into it and improve the atmosphere of the gym.

“And that takes a special person,” he said.

St. Clair County Community College is looking for someone who can provide entertainment as Skip and Lil’ Skip at all home games and at community events. The position is part time and pays $12 per hour.

According to the college’s job listing, responsibilities include:

  • Display enthusiasm and high energy at all time to keep entertainment high.

  • Develop, create and execute skits to perform on the field or court to enhance the game-day experience for Skippers fans.

  • Preserve the identity of the mascot without deviating from established character including: body language/mannerisms, attitude, fan interaction and team representation.

  • Work well in a team environment.

  • Administer costume maintenance as well as props daily.

Requirements for the position include:

  • Flexible work schedule: must be available to work nights and weekends as assigned.

  • Previous experience as a mascot preferred.

  • Must be in good physical shape and able to occasionally lift 25 or more pounds.

  • Theater and dance experience preferred.

  • Available for up to 24 hours per week from August until June.

Barrett said there are also height requirements. Whoever is Skip should be around 5 feet, 11 inches tall to 6 feet, 2 inches tall and Lil’ Skip should be around 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall.

SC4 was founded in 1923 and initially named Port Huron Junior College. It got its first cartoon mascot in the form of Skipper T. Mouse in 1957 and over the years mascot symbols have included a sailing wheel, lighthouse, and flame, Lacey said.

He said Skip was created in 2012 and Lil’ Skip to accompany him soon after that.

The mascot identity is always secret and in the past mostly students have filled the role, but the college is not opposed to having community members take on the personas, Barrett said.

She and Lacey have both donned the costumes before and she said it was "super cool."

The anonymity gives you the freedom to bring out some more exuberant parts of your personality you might not normally get to show, she said.

SC4 athletics specialist Mikayla Shell has also donned the mascot costume. She said the mascots become very involved in the community and they’re a big hit with the younger and older crowds. It’s fun to see younger fans’ reactions.

“You kind of feel like Santa a little,” she said.

Barrett said the job was posted recently and there hasn’t been interest yet.

The mascots report directly to Barrett and she’s still working on what the interview will look like, but it will include putting on the costume to see how the applicant interacts with people in character, she said.

Although the position requires working evenings and weekends, Barrett said it’s worth it. The future mascots will get to be part of the growing Skippers athletics.

“Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of something like that?,” she asked.

People can apply for the job on Indeed.com and on the college’s website. People can contact the college at (810) 984-3881 and enrollment@sc4.edu.
