Talent show today in Glenwood Park

MACOMB — McDonough County Special Recreation Association's (MCRSDA) summer campers will be holding a free talent show on Tuesday, July 26th from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Stone Shelter in Glenwood Park.

“We've been practicing. All of our campers love music. They will be singing a few different songs. We also have some that prefer not to sing, but are doing other things like reading, some scripting and we have some that are technical support that aren't into performance, but want to be part of the show,” said Julie Eggleston, MCRSA supervisor.

There will a small reception of lemonade and cookies afterwards.

This year's camp had 12 campers. Camp was offered four days a week, with the option of going two days a week. The campers are adults and some have jobs or other activities they are involved in. The talent show is strictly for campers to participate.

The Special Olympics Bowling team is at capacity this year. The special bowlers meets together to practice at Digger's College City Bowl in Macomb. MCSRA also has a program called “bowling buddies” where participants can get together, have fun, see their friends, but not worry about competing.

The Special Olympics Bowling lasts until September 29, when everyone is brought to the regional competition in Moline. Whoever gets gold in their division goes on to compete in Peoria at the state level.

The MCSRA is planning fall programs. Surveys go out by August for programs that start after Labor Day. One is an in-person cooking class including microwave cooking and virtual planning which will take place in the Knoblauch Hall kitchen lab on Western Illinois University's campus. The program is facilitated by WIU Dietetics students, who assist and present with the face to face cooking class. “Everybody gets together and does something – going out to eat, a movie, get together and do Bingo, WIU football games, the homecoming parade and also an overnight camping adventure.” Eggleston said.

MCSRA is connecting with Camp Courageous, a camp for people with disabilities, in Monticello, IA.

Mayhem Graphics, who helped create the new MCRSA logo, are printing new uniforms. MCSRA is connecting with the business again to have an online swag sale. The proceeds from the sale go toward funding the uniforms and for an annual scholarship.
