Four local youth are participating in the 2022 Rifle Junior Olympic National Championships May 11-15, at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan.

They are Kasey Metz, 14, and Claudia Muzik. 16, both Clyde High School students; Hailey Singleton, 15, Bellevue High School; and Deitrich Bergman, 15, Port Clinton High School. They are part of a shooting team/club sponsored by the Green Springs American Legion, Post 295, shooting air rifles or bore rifles. Coaches are parents Matt Muzik and Jared Singleton.

This is the second year these youth will participate in the Olympics. Only the top 200 shooters in the country are accepted, said coach Matt Muzik.

Since they have competition experience behind them, Singleton said she knows what to expect this year.

Claudia Muzik, who has been shooting for nine years, said the stakes are high, with college coaches scouting there. She noted she can compete in Junior Olympics until age 21.

“It’s a good day when somebody takes home a medal,” said Matt Muzik.

Bergman won a bronze medal last year. He joined the team after first shooting at Camp Perry. Claudia Muzik and Singleton already are trained to be Level One shooting coaches.

Metz and Bergman plan to take coaching classes. Some of the qualifiers have shooting ranges at home. The team practices twice week at shooting ranges set up inside the American Legion. The four qualifiers practiced five times a week before they competed for a spot in the Junior Olympics, shooting at least 500 rounds of ammunition.

Matt Muzik is grateful for the continued support from the American Legion, which has raised funds to provide six electronic targets for practice.

“It keeps the kids interested,” he said.

Students in the group range from third graders to high school students. The season ends this month.
