A talk on female lighthouse keepers highlights these 6 events happening in Brunswick

The Sandbar lecture series presents a talk on "Female United States Lighthouse Keepers." Old Baldy Foundation educator and collections coordinator Jake Grossman will discuss the key roles women historically played in managing continuous lighthouse operations when crises made it impossible for male lighthouse keepers.

The lecture will be held 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 East Second St., Ocean Isle Beach.

Grossman graduated from Temple University with an undergraduate degree in history and a master’s degree in public history.

Lighthouse keeper jobs were some of the first non-clerical government roles available for women. Grossman will highlight noteworthy 18th and 19th century women keepers, including Hannah Thomas, Rebecca Long, Catherine Moore, and others.

Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series

The Tonez will perform a variety of beach, R&B, classic rock 'n' roll, country and Top 40s music from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23 at the Sunset Beach Sound Waves concert series to be held at the Village Park gazebo, 1791 Queen Anne St. Free.

Shallotte Summerfest concert series

The Brunswick Parks & Recreation Department present Shallotte Summerfest concert series. The local band Randy Atwood & Renegades will perform 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 at the Mulberry Park Amphitheater, 123 Mulberry St., Shallotte. Bring a chair or blanket.

Oak Island concert series

The Oak Island "Bands by the Beach" concert series will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at the Middleton Park Amphitheater, 102 SE 47th St. The Back Porch Rockers will play.

Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert

Come to the Ocean Isle Beach Summer Concert, also known as the Peggy Hughes Concert Series, and listen to Top 40, classic rock, country music from the Cat 5 Band 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 at Town Center Park, 11 E Second St. Free.

Holden Beach Concert Series

The Holden Beach Concert Series welcomes Carolina Kool from 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27 at the pavilion under the Holden Beach bridge. Refreshments available for purchase. Bring a chair or beach towel. Free. 910-842-6488.
