The Lions Club is selling Christmas ornaments of the old school. These would make great gifts for Sandy Valley alumni. The gold ornaments are $10 each and will be sold at home basketball games, or by calling Carol Snyder at 330-265-6585.

Mark your calendars for the Lions Club Senior Citizens Dinner. It will be held in person on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Crossroads Restaurant.

Sandy Valley Class of 1981 will hold its 40th reunion this Saturday, Nov. 6. Join them at 4:30 p.m. for mass at Christ the Servant Parish at Our Lady of Peace Church in Canton, followed by cocktails (cash bar) starting at 6 p.m. at Tozzi’s on 12th, and dinner at 7 p.m.. All entrees are $26, and includes choice of steak, fish, chicken or pork chops.

Aultman Hospital will offer COVID vaccinations in the Magnolia Park on Nov. 9. This is open to anyone who needs to receive the vaccination. The first dose will be available between 9:30 a.m. and noon. The second dose is available Nov. 30, 9:30 a.m. and noon. They are offering a gift card incentive to those getting their first shot. No appointment is necessary.

On Saturday, Nov. 13 Sandy Valley Church of God is hosting "Christmas in the Valley." This is a family Christmas luncheon. Admission is $5 per person. They are looking for ladies who will sponsor a table. This includes decorating the table in your favorite Christmas theme, providing dessert for your guests (six per table) and a small gift for each guest. The Magnolia Playground Project Steak Dinner Fundraiser at Tozzi’s Restaurant in Magnolia has been cancelled. If you donated items/gift baskets for this event, they will be contacting you.

A Sandy Valley Community Tournament of Lights holiday decorating contest will be held Nov. 1-14. There will be three divisions: Lightweight - 2,500 or less lights, porches, windows, and or trees; Middleweight - 25,000 max lights moderate years decor; and Heavyweight - over 25,000 lights everything goes. Rules are to keep it family friendly, and must be in the Sandy Valley Local School District, including Sandy, Rose, and Pike townships.

The Nest Restaurant will hold a monthly fundraiser for the Sandy Valley Academic Boosters on the second Tuesday of every month. Starting Nov. 9 the club will receive 10% of that day’s sales. So plan your monthly meals accordingly, and help support the academic boosters.

In appreciation for their dedicated service to our country, the students of Sandy Valley Local Schools invite all veterans to attend a special Veteran’s Day open house on Friday, Nov. 12, 9-11 a.m. varsity gymnasium. Refreshments will be served, the jazz band and select choir will perform, and a tribute video will be played. Yard signs will also be provided. If you are unable to attend, you are invited to drive to the high school office between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. where the entrance will be lined with flags and signs. You will be presented with a yard sign to take home, and the students, under the direction of Allison Morris, will place a video of thanks online for you. (Instructions on how to view the video will be provided when you receive your sign). Please remain in your car when you come if you are getting signs only. It's that time of the year to reserve four free breakfasts and four free lunches for your children over Thanksgiving break. Sandy Valley's Food Service team is making plans to get food bundles ready to be passed out on Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Door H11. Please visit the Sandy Valley website to complete the form to reserve your meals.

The Sandy Valley Class of 1960 will hold a class reunion on Nov. 10, 1-4 p.m. at Tozzi’s on 12th in Canton. The cost is $15, to be paid at the door. Menu choices are sausage and peppers with pasta, grilled chicken salad with rice soup, or spaghetti and meatballs. Bread, salad and soft drinks are included. The Magnolia Lions Club, in partnership with the Magnolia Fire Department, held its annual Halloween Bonfire and Costume Contest. Everyone enjoyed a great evening of trick-or-treating with nice weather and safe fun. Donuts and cider were served by members of the Lions Club. Costume contest winners received the traditional silver dollar prize and humorous introductions from Bob Leach. Thank you to all who attended and continue to keep this hometown tradition going. Sandy Valley Local Schools are excited to announce that we will be holding its second annual Affordable Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 18 at the elementary school. Sandy Valley’s Affordable Christmas is a shopping experience where you will be able to purchase new gifts for your family at approximately one tenth of its original retail price. You will be able to purchase 2-3 gifts for each child. If you have a high school student, you will be able to purchase a gift set at a discounted price that includes a hoodie, personal hygiene items and a gift card. If you have a child under the age of 12 months, you will be able to purchase a gift set that includes diapers, wipes and a toy at a discounted price. Their house didn’t stay empty for long as the nursery was recently filled by the birth of their daughter Isla May Douglas. She was born Tuesday, October 26 at 6:14 a.m. She weighed 8 lbs, 6.9 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. Relatives from the Valley are Grandparents are Mark and Julie Bland, Great Grandpa George May and Great Grandparents Bob and Beulah Bland of Carrollton-- and of course, proud Aunt Olivia Bland. Congratulations to all, this little girl is surrounded by a lot of love!

Don't forget Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Make sure to set your clocks back one hour when you go to bed Saturday night. Also make sure you have fresh batteries on hand so you can put new ones in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Get started on your Christmas shopping this weekend. East Sparta's next Craft Show will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, at the East Sparta Community Building, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will also be raffle baskets you can enter to win.

The next Euchre Night will be Friday, Nov. 12, at the East Sparta Community Building. Game time is 7 p.m. The cost is $5.

It's Paint Time for Kids on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2-4 p.m. at the East Sparta Community Building.

The next fundraiser for the East Sparta Playground will be Saturday, Nov. 13 at the East Sparta Community Building. More details to follow.

The family of Jimmy Roberto is holding a benefit dinner for him at the East Sparta Community Building on Sunday, Nov. 14, starting at 2 p.m. Jimmy has been in remission from lung cancer for awhile. This past year it returned worse than before. All money raised will help with his medical bills and expenses. The cost of the dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets for the basket raffle are $1 each or six for $5. Everyone is welcome. Help show Jimmy the wonderful community support we have here in the valley. The Stark County Library Bookmobile has moved to a more visible and convenient spot in Waynesburg. Each Wednesday evening from 4:30-6:30 pm you will find them parked in the Cibo's Restaurant parking lot. Anyone from the valley may visit the Bookmobile to access materials.
