Talk About Woodville: A new trash company serving the village

You may have noticed recently that the white trucks that have been collecting garbage in the village for the last few decades have been replaced by a fleet of green and white trucks. After almost 40 years, Tom Dunn, owner of Buckeye Sanitation, decided to retire and sold the business.

Stevens Disposal and Recycling Service, Inc. purchased Buckeye and has been collecting trash in the village for the last few weeks while the village posted an invitation to bid on a five-year contract for trash collection. Once the bids were opened and reviewed, Stevens was awarded the contract.

Stevens Disposal is a family-owned business with over 40 years of experience and a main office in Temperance, Michigan. In addition to residential trash collection, they also offer recycling, dumpster rental, and portable toilets.“Our business is picking up,” reads the slogan on the side of Stevens Disposal trucks.

New trash and recycling carts due next week

Next week will start the delivery of new trash and recycle carts to residents. Each cart has a barcode that designates which residence it is assigned to. Collection will be done with an automated arm truck which requires carts to be set in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb. If there is no curb, carts must be no more than 3 feet from the road.

Carts will need to be at the curb by 7: a.m. Thursdays to guarantee collections as pick-up times may vary from the current schedule.

Like so many other things these days, the cost of trash service will increase to $15 per month. Extra carts are available for rental at $36 per year and can be ordered by contacting the Stevens’ office at 1-800-779-0344. All bulk items will require a tag which must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance. Tags are $10 each and may be purchased at the Village Administration building on Lime Street.Beginning Feb. 8, recycling will be picked up every other week instead of the current schedule of second and fourth Thursdays each month.A flier detailing the upcoming changes in trash service will be included in the January utility bills. The flier will provide information such as the required placement of the carts so that they are accessible by the trucks, what items can be placed in the recycling carts, and a message to residents from Stevens Disposal. The flier will also be posted on the village’s website for easy reference at http://villageofwoodville.com.

“We’re a family-owned company,” said Kaleb Kline, a member of that Stevens family working at the Gibsonburg location. “We’re looking to take care of our customers like they are family.”

To help track holidays affecting trash pickup and which weeks recycling will be collected, the village will include a calendar in the February utility bills. The dates are also on their online calendar at http://villageofwoodville.com/calendar.htm.
