Talk About Woodville: Village on hunt for more lifeguards

Do you enjoy sitting poolside, soaking up the sun and people watching? Can you swim like a fish? Are you looking for a flexible, part-time summer job? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Village of Woodville has an offer for you: Become a certified lifeguard and you won’t need to buy a pool pass this summer. Instead, they will pay you to spend time at the Woodville Pool. If working at the pool is not for you, perhaps you know someone who would love the opportunity.

The village is planning for the 2023 season but first needs to hire enough staff to even be able to open the pool this summer. They have been looking for guards for the past month but the nationwide lifeguard shortage that occurred last year appears to be on repeat. Many local communities have ramped up their advertising recently in an attempt to staff their quarries and pools.

The minimum age to be a lifeguard at the Woodville Pool is 15 by completion of the certification course. If hired, half of the certification fees will be refunded at the end of the season. Information on Red Cross certification courses can be found at redcross.org/take-a-class/lifeguarding.

“Adults are welcome as well,” said pool manager, Lori Damschroder. “I didn’t start lifeguarding until I was in my forties. And I’m still going strong.”

Damschroder has worked at the pool since 2013, becoming a manager three years later. She received her first Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in 2016.

If the village is unable to hire enough lifeguards, hours at the pool will need to be drastically reduced, or worse, the pool will remain closed this season.

“We need at least four more guards,” said Damschroder.

Applications are available at the Municipal Building at 530 Lime Street and online at villageofwoodville.com/employment.htm. For more information regarding available certification courses, call or text 419-706-6840.
