Talk About Woodville: Woodmore FFA member skilled in the art of the interview

Even though Alexis Perry is just a sophomore at Woodmore, she is already skilled in the art of the interview. And she has the award to prove it.

Last November, Perry competed in the FFA sub-districts job interview contest where she placed first in her division. Moving on to the district competition, she took first once again. That earned her a chance to compete at the state competition where she placed among the top five qualifying finalists in Ohio.

To prepare for competition, Perry practiced filling out job applications and writing thank you letters. She improved her interview skills by practicing with community members and by asking her FFA adviser for hard questions. For the job interview contest, she had to complete all the steps required to apply for a position as a farm hand, including an application, a resume and cover letter, an in-person interview, and writing a follow-up letter.

Alexis Perry heads to state competition

On Dec. 1, Perry competed alongside the other members of Woodmore’s parliamentary procedure team at the district competition where they finished sixth. Two days later Perry boarded a bus, and after a send-off parade through Elmore, was headed for the state FFA interviewing competition at the Ohio State University.

“I thought I might puke during the ride, but I pushed my nerves aside and let my confidence come through,” said Perry with a laugh when asked if she had been nervous about competing.

Perry successfully tamped down those nerves and her confidence took her to fourth place in the state finals.

“Lexi is a bright young lady who is very talented in her interviewing skills,” wrote Perry’s FFA adviser, Krista Hellwig, in a recent post on the chapter’s Facebook page.

Perry joined 4-H at age 8

Perry has been a member of the Country Crew 4-H Club since age 8 and joined FFA in 8th grade. She has participated in every type of individual and team FFA competition available, from livestock to plants to interviewing. Obviously, the interview competition is where she excels.

“I’ve always had a strong voice and I’m good at coming up with things off the top of my head. I’ve gotten better at it with practice," Perry said.

Lexi Perry plans to attend the Ohio State University, join the university’s livestock judging team, and enter the medical program.

Perry is a very busy young lady. In addition to FFA and showing sheep in 4-H, she competes all over the state in Beef Exhibitor Show Total (BEST) Ohio Cattlemen's Association Cattle Show with her livestock. She also plays volleyball, and is a member of the Ottawa County Junior Fair Board as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“To relax or clear my head, I like working with my livestock because that’s what drives my happiness and lets me do something I love. I also love to listen to music,” said Perry.

After high school, Perry plans to attend OSU, join the university’s livestock judging team, and enter the medical program. Her long-term plan is to become a general surgeon.

Perry lives just outside Woodville with her parents, Paul and Susan, and her brothers, Luke and Brock.
