Talk About Woodville: Woodmore Schools slates Legislation Day events on May 15

Woodmore Schools is sponsoring a Legislation Day on May 15. They have invited four legislators who represent the Woodmore district to visit the elementary and middle schools in Woodville and the high school in Elmore. The guests include State Sen. Theresa Gavarone, State Sen. Bill Reineke, State Rep. Elgin Rogers Jr. and State Rep. Gary Click.

The legislators will be greeted by school superintendent Dr. Mary Schaeffer; Treasurer Lisa Cruickshank; Elementary Principal Gary Haas; Middle School Principal Kevin Ball, and the main office staff.

A tour of the elementary and middle schools will be given by student ambassadors. Throughout the day, the legislators will also meet with Mayor Ty Tracy of Woodville and Mayor Tom Jackson of Elmore, the police and fire chiefs from both villages, and student council members.

“The goal of the school’s Legislation Day is to promote the good things that Woodmore is doing with the students and to promote public education in general,” said school board president, Jan Busdeker.

First, third, and fifth grades will present musical performances for the visitors. Art students will show off their artwork and awards that they have received this year. There will be presentations from the 3D printing class, welding class, and jazz band. There will also be a presentation about Camp Wildcats, a day camp offered to Woodmore School District's special education students. The legislators will also have a chance to see a snippet of Wildcat News in action. Wildcat News is the school’s biweekly news broadcast.

AP History students will have the opportunity to ask the legislators questions related to government offices. Other students will have a chance to discuss what their experiences at Woodmore mean to them.

The day will wrap up with a question and answer session about important topics in education.

Grand Parade update

As I mentioned in a previous column, there are plans to repair or replace the Cherry Street bridge within the next two years. In the meantime, the weight restrictions on the bridge will affect this year’s Fourth of July Grand Parade.Committee president Lynn Bunn recently met with Police Chief Roy Whitehead and Village Administrator Tom Brickley to discuss how best to move forward with the parade. With the current weight limits, fire trucks and other large vehicles cannot cross the bridge. Several area fire departments participate in the parade each year.

Instead of lining up as usual on Lueke Avenue and adjacent streets and starting the parade by crossing the Cherry Street bridge, participants will line up in the parking lot at the Woodville Pool. The parade will start by heading north on Perry Street, then west on College, south on Pemberville Road/Ohio 105, then east on Erie Street to disperse back at Trail Marker Park. The judges’ stand will be moved to College Avenue near Elm Street. Spectators who normally watch the parade along Lueke or Cherry streets will want to find another location along the parade route. The Grand Parade will begin at noon July 1. Anyone who would like to participate in the parade may register at woodville4th.com/parade. Registration deadline is June 26.
