Tallahassee Piggly Wiggly shoppers receive $50 and a very Merry Christmas wish

Erwin Jackson stood around the check out counters in the southside Piggly Wiggly Thursday morning, watching shoppers haul their carts full of groceries to the cash register.

Jackson, a well known City Hall critic and local businessman, couldn't think of anything better to do that morning except walk up to unsuspecting customers, tell them Merry Christmas — and give them $50.

"We're lowering the cost of groceries for a few people, and we're having a lot of fun in the process," he said. Jackson said he expected to hand out between $9,000 and $10,000 to shoppers.

Eddie Ruth Kirby was one of the customers who was piling collard greens, shrimp, ham and eggs onto the check-out belt. She expects to host about 18 people for Christmas dinner, she said, and will be serving gumbo, shrimp and grits, venison, chitterling loaf, potato salad, red velvet cake and more.

When Jackson approached her with the $50 bill, she gave him a hug. "Everybody is coming together today helping everybody out," she said. "It's just wonderful to see."
