TPD: Two arrested after teen killed in botched robbery; 2nd fatal shooting in near 24-hour span

A teenage boy was shot and killed Thursday night in a botched drug robbery in south Tallahassee, according to police.

It happened around 8:40 p.m. at Keith and Liberty Streets. Investigators quickly arrested two people, Javontea Williams, 18, of Havana, and Nathan Porter, 17, on murder charges. The name of the victim has not been released.

Williams and the teen who was shot and killed tried to rob Porter, the Tallahassee Police Department said in an incident report. Porter shot the teen and fled the scene.

Arriving officers found the teen, who was rushed to a local hospital and later died. Investigators said he was armed with a gun during the robbery.

Both Williams and Porter were quickly located and taken to police headquarters for interviews, said Heather Merritt, a TPD spokeswoman.

Williams, who was charged with first-degree murder, is being held in the Leon County Detention Facility. Porter, who was charged with third-degree murder, is being held in the Juvenile Assessment Center.

There have been at least 12 shootings since the new year, resulting in at least eight injuries and five deaths, according to an analysis of gun violence by the Tallahassee Democrat.

The latest gunfire happened less than a mile from another fatal shooting a day earlier that left MaKayla Bryant — a 22-year-old Florida A&M University graduate student — dead. There is no connection between the shootings, according to Merritt.
