The Hollywood Walk of Fame has gotten a whole lot funkier.

George Clinton, who founded Parliament-Funkadelic in a Plainfield, New Jersey, barbershop and resides in Tallahassee, got his star on the famous Los Angeles strip on Friday, Jan 19.

Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tallahassee civil rights attorney Ben Crump, and performer Janie Bradford spoke at the ceremony. Sibley Scoles emceed.

“George Clinton is an American treasure,” stated the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Jan. 9 in the bestowment announcement. “As one of the foremost innovators of Funk, Clinton is the mastermind behind the legendary Parliament/Funkadelic (P-Funk), creating a uniquely identifiable and timeless art that has lifted Funk to an internationally recognized and respected form of music.”

“(I Wanna) Testify” was the breakthrough hit for the Parliaments in 1967. After becoming Parliament Funkadelic and superstars around the world, Clinton and the group eventually landed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Five blocks of Plainfield Avenue in Plainfield were renamed “Parliament Funkadelic Way” by the city in 2022. The area is where Clinton's barbershop, the Silk Palace, stood.

Clinton's star in Hollywood was previously announced in 2021.

During the ceremony, Crump told a story of how he was in Clinton's Tallahassee art studio, and the musician began reflecting and questioning why he was blessed.

"I want to say to you publicly, George, the reason you are so blessed in the latter stages of your life is because you have been such a blessing to so many people in the course of your life," Crump told the gathered crowd to cheers.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is administered by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Watch the ceremony on this story at tallahassee.com.
