Tallahassee residents have a reason to celebrate this week as the capital city was named one of the top mid-size cities in the nation.

HGTV recently published a list of “The 20 best mid-size cities in the United States” based on each city's outdoor activities, public artworks, and sporting events.

Tallahassee was one of three Florida cities on HGTV’s list. Tampa, along with Port St. Lucie, which was also one of the top places for population growth, were the other two best mid-size cities in Florida.

The Home & Garden television network says that according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the nonpartisan think tank, the Milken Institute, newcomers are flocking to these cities with populations from 100,000 to 500,000 that are adding residents at a steady clip.

“Tallahassee is growing, moving up in the ranks as a top mid-size city, appealing for a feel that is both urban and suburban,” HGTV reported in a CNN broadcast.

Visitors and residents of the capital of the Sunshine State can partake in its nightlife, museums, and public destinations, like Cascades Park and Lake Ella.

Tallahassee, which has approximately 200,000 residents, has a strong educational background which may have played a key role in earning the accolade.

Home to Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College, the capital city provides an academic environment that attracts students from all over the country. These institutions add to the city’s cultural diversity as well.

Students and residents can enjoy the restaurants and shopping in College Town or stop by the newest skate park along FAMU Way.

“The state capital wows with its historic downtown,” according to HGTV. Individuals can enjoy a self-guided mural tour at Railroad Square or visit the Tallahassee Museum.

The network also notes the city is also close to the sandy beaches at Bald Point State Park and the St. Mark's lighthouse.

Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey shared his thoughts on the achievement and says it proves just how great the community is.

“Once again, we are nationally recognized as one of the best cities to raise a family,” Dailey told the Tallahassee Democrat. “It’s just a reminder of how wonderful our community is and again how fortunate we are to live in a place that is great to live, work, and play.”

Tallahassee has received national recognition in the past, including being acknowledged twice by the National Civic League as an All-American City (1999 and 2015).

Other cities on the HGTV list included Henderson, Nevada; Fort Collins, Colorado; Minneapolis; Huntsville, Alabama; Frisco, Texas; and Salem, Oregon.
