Tallmadge tops Aurora; Buchtel wins City Series regular season title in boys basketball

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tallmadge 79, Aurora 61

Caiden McCullough scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half Friday to lead the Blue Devils (9-4, 6-3) in Suburban League American Conference action.

Because of his efforts, Tallmadge took a four-point lead at the break and cruised in the second half.

“We have guys that can make shots when we move the ball,” Blue Devils coach Bill Johnson said. “Tonight, it was Caiden and it was huge for us. He was huge on the defensive end and huge rebounding. It was just an overall great game.”

Aaron Gergely scored 21 points. Ty Hurst had 12 points and Collin Dixon put in a yeomanlike effort with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Aurora (5-7, 3-7) was paced by Johnathan Ugran (22 points) and Jack Cardaman (17).

Buchtel 74, Kenmore-Garfield 41

The visiting Griffins (13-5, 10-0) won the City Series regular season championship with four players in double figures: Khoi Thurmon (16 points), Amire Robinson (13 points), Christian Harmon (13 points) and Amir Hubbard (10 points).

Marquis Vaughn scored 10 points for Kenmore-Garfield.

Firestone 58, North 34

Dondi Harper scored 21 points, Kameryn Kennerly added 11 and Jemyrin Miller chipped in 10 to lead the visiting Falcons. Lamar Dampier paced the Vikings with 13 points.

Ellet 55, East 54

Trevor Ingham made two free throws with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to cap a comeback win for Ellet, which outscored East 21-6 in the final eight minutes.

Chase Merring scored 18 points for host Ellet and Ingham finished with 12 points. East's leading scorers were Eric Holley III (24 points) and Tristan Anderson (14 points).

Archbishop Hoban 57, Massillon 47

Jayvian Crable scored 14 points to lead the visiting Knights (10-6) to a win over the Tigers (6-7). Hoban's Jonas Nichols contributed 12 points and Will Scott had 10. Massillon's Elijah Farrington scored 11 points

Revere 72, Barberton 51

Chris Muntean scored 29 points and Carson Banks had 13 points for host Revere.

Streetsboro 55, Coventry 42

Senior guard Devin Reese scored 20 points to lead the Rockets (10-4, 9-1) to a Metro Athletic Conference win at home.

Manchester 50, Triway 45

With a 22-point game from Ben Noirot, the visiting Panthers (11-7, 4-5) picked up a PAC-7 win. Manchester's Kenton Duty and Trent Pappas scored seven points apiece.

CVCA 61, Tuslaw 53

Freshman Darryn Peterson scored 26 points to lead the Royals to a PAC-7 win at home.

Peterson hit nine field goals, including two 3-pointers, and was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Northwest 55, Fairless 35

Northwest remained atop the PAC-7 with a win at home. Chase Badger made four 3-pointers and led Northwest (8-6, 7-1) in scoring with 14 points.

Walsh Jesuit 66, Mentor Lake Catholic 48

In a Crown Conference game, Rico Pickett scored 18 points, Tyler Hannigan added 10 and Max Matta and Tyler Bell scored eight apiece to lead the Warriors to a home win. Walsh (13-2, 6-0) made 10 3-pointers in the game.

Mentor Lake Catholic was led by Aiden Fitzgerald's game-high 23 points.

Alliance 73, Marlington 52

The Aviators clinched a share of the Eastern Buckeye Conference title with a win over the Dukes. Diego Allen scored 22 points and grabbed 11 boards to lead Alliance (12-2, 9-1). K'Vaughn Davis added 17 points and Gage Fore scored 13 and had eight assists.

GIRLS BOWLING

Tallmadge 2,364, Barberton 1,611

Tallmadge's DeeDee Elijah rolled the high game (255) and series (477) at Stonehedge.

Lake 2,280, Jackson 1,778

Emma Gross bowled a career-best 393 series to lead the Blue Streaks to a win.

Archbishop Hoban 2,193, Rootstown 1,993

At Spins Bowl Kent, Carly Jones once again led the Knights (9-0) to a victory with pin totals in her two games of 196 and 216.

BOYS BOWLING

Tallmadge 2,465, Barberton 1,524

Tallmadge's Gavin Warren rolled the high game (235) and series (451) at Stonehedge.

Ellet 2,261, Lake Center Christian 2,160

Ellet's Alex Russell's 236-pin total was the top game and he had the best series at 402.

HOCKEY

Nordonia 5, Elyria Catholic 0

The Knights' quest for their second title in three years in the GCHSHL's Blue South Division is alive and well.

Nordonia avenged its lone Blue South loss Friday with a win over the Panthers at Gilmour Academy. Jacob Waite opened the scoring for the Knights with a goal four seconds before the first intermission. Noah Vega scored early in the second period, and captain Max Zuschin scored twice. Brett Rapp capped the win with a goal with 1:25 left.

Nordonia finished with a 37-14 edge in shots on goal, and goaltender Kevin Waite picked up the shutout with 14 saves.
