Tampa Bay area bar named semifinalist in James Beard Awards

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A St. Petersburg bar has been named a semifinalist in the James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Webb’s City Cellar, a tasting room at Green Bench Brewing Co. in downtown St. Pete, has been nominated in the “Outstanding Bar” category. It is the only Florida bar to be named a semifinalist and the only Tampa Bay area restaurant or bar to be named in any category.

The James Beard Awards recognize restaurants and chefs across 22 categories, including “Outstanding Restauranteur,” “Best New Restaurant” and “Emerging Chef.”

The foundation said the “Outstanding Bar” award is presented to a “wine bar, beer bar, cocktail bar, coffee bar, or any other business whose primary offering is beverage and that demonstrates consistent excellence in curating a selection or in the preparation of drinks, along with outstanding atmosphere, hospitality, and operations, while contributing positively to its broader community.”

To be eligible for the award, candidates must have been in business for at least three years. The winner will receive a certificate and a medallion.

Webb’s City Cellar opened in downtown St. Petersburg in 2019. It specialized in mixed culture, sour and wild ales.

The James Beard Award winner will be announced on Monday, June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
