Tampa Bay gets a touch of fall. But hot, wet weather is on the way.

Tampa Bay residents woke up to a delightful hint of fall Sunday morning with morning lows dipping into the 60s for the first time since May. The season’s first cooldown was expected to last into Monday and even part of Tuesday, too.

But summer isn’t ready to completely loosen its grip on the region yet: After a couple of days of highs topping out in the low 80s, temperatures are expected to tick up into the high 80s later this week.

And, it’s likely to get wet and muggy, too.

A weather system moving into the Gulf of Mexico is expected to start dumping rain on the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday and keep rain chances elevated until Saturday, said Josh Linker, a meteorologist at Spectrum Bay News 9.

Rain chances will be 60% on Wednesday, 70% on Thursday and Friday, and 50% on Saturday, according to the news station’s 7-day forecast.

If it’s not raining, it will be hot and muggy, with highs in the high 80s and lows in the high 70s, which is very summer-like.

“I know right now we’re just getting our first taste of fall,” said Stephen Shively, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tampa Bay office. “It’s going to break a couple of people’s hearts to know that in just a few days we’ll be switching back over to summertime temperatures and moisture....Unfortunately, the last thing we need to hear in October: warm, muggy, cloudy kind of days for us.”

There are two bits of good news tucked in the forecasts, however, at least for now.

For one, the weather system in the gulf isn’t currently expected to power up into a tropical system, Shively said, though forecasters at the National Hurricane Center will be monitoring it just in case.

And there’s a chance that, like this weekend, the back half of next weekend will cool off again, according to a longer-term forecast from The Weather Channel.
