Some Tampa Bay Publix stores reopen earlier than expected after Ian

Publix Super Markets is reopening some stores around Tampa Bay early, spokesperson Hannah Herring said in a statement.

The Lakeland-based grocer is beginning to open stores around Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Lake, Hernando, Manatee and Osceola Counties on Thursday, the statement said. Publix closed early on Tuesday in 11 counties ahead of the catastrophic Category 4 Hurricane Ian. At the time, the chain was planning to reopen on Friday morning. The Tampa Bay area missed the brunt of the storm as Ian made a direct hit around Fort Myers.

“We continue to assess the impacts of Hurricane Ian on our operating area. We are working to reopen stores as it becomes safe to do so,” the statement said. “As always, our priority remains on the safety of our associates, customers and communities we serve, and part of that means ensuring access to food, water and other essential items to restock pantries.”

Publix’s live store tracker shows stores across Clearwater, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg are already open while a store in Largo’s Tri-City Plaza and a handful in South Tampa remain closed until Friday morning. Customers can check store status online at www.publix.com/storm.
