Tampa woman dies after jumping off I-4 overpass near Ybor City, troopers say

A 50-year-old Tampa woman died after jumping off an Interstate 4 overpass just past 4 p.m. Monday near Ybor City, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

At this point in the investigation, troopers said they don’t know why the woman jumped.

The woman jumped near the interstate’s entrance ramp on 50th Street, just east of Ybor City and downtown Tampa, troopers said. They said she landed in the northbound lanes of 50th Street.

Tampa Police Department officers also at the scene said the woman was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Troopers said the northbound lanes of 50th Street are currently closed, but the east and westbound entrance ramps onto I-4, also known as State Road 400, remain open.

Florida highway traffic cameras do not show any increased level of traffic on I-4 near the site of the incident, which occurred during Monday’s afternoon rush hour.
