Tapper lambasts Greene’s censure of Tlaib as hypocritical

CNN’s Jake Tapper suggested that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) move to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) is hypocritical, pointing to the criticism that the Georgia Republican has received over her own comments.

“She got a lot of criticism from fellow Democrats, and you might be sitting there thinking, okay, I can see why that might bother, or even outrage people, but are House Republicans really in a position to censure Tlaib?” he asked.

In his closing comments on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Tapper took aim at Republicans, specifically Greene, for moving to censure Tlaib over her comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict. He also cited examples of actions and comments made by Greene, who has sparked criticism from Republicans and the Jewish community for her past actions.

“You’re never gonna believe who the Republican offering this motion to censure Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is. I want you to take a guess. Go ahead. Take a guess. That’s right. It’s Marjorie Taylor Greene,” Tapper said.

Tapper rattled off a series of incidents concerning Greene, including speaking at a conference organized by Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist leader, last year, and for pushing forward the replacement theory. He also listed out a series of comments made by Greene, including one in which she compared former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) COVID-19 restrictions on the House floor to the Holocaust.

“You know, we can look back in a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star and they were definitely treated like second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany,” Greene said at the time. “And this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about.”

She later apologized for those comments.

Just last month, she also faced backlash from her colleagues and critics after she confused the Jewish holidays. She had posted a picture of a menorah, a candelabra used to celebrate Hanukkah, while wishing people a blessed Yom Kippur.

At the time of the explosion at the Gaza hospital compound, Tlaib targeted the Biden administration on social media over the hospital blast in a post that is still up, blaming Israel for the blast. She later said in a statement that there have been questions raised about information from Gaza and Israel.

Last week, Greene moved to force a censure vote on Tlaib, accusing the Michigan Democrat of “antisemitic activity” and “sympathizing with terrorist organizations.”

Tapper also criticized Greene’s resolution, saying it reads like someone who “learned about the Arab-Israeli conflict maybe 10 minutes before, who maybe didn’t even have access to Wikipedia.” He also said that the resolution “twists a bunch of things that [Tlaib] said beyond recognition.”
