Kroger and the Tazewell Animal Protective Society celebrated a fundraising milestone last week as the no-kill animal shelter has earned more than $12,000 through its membership in the supermarket chain's Community Rewards program.

According to Kroger Central Division spokesperson Eric Halvorson, the achievement displays the fundraising potential for organizations enrolled in the Community Rewards program. TAPS earned more from its membership than any other participant in the Kroger Central Division, which serves Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio.

“It’s a remarkably simple concept,” said Halvorson. “You shop with us. We donate to your favorite local charity. We’re here … to show our gratitude to supporters of TAPS. It’s because of them, the people who love the shelter and the trust they place in Kroger, that we were able to make such a donation to support the service provided by TAPS every day through the past year.”

Jennifer Filley, operations manager at TAPS, said a slowdown in pet adoptions in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic means the shelter needs to provide more animals with food.

“More puppies are growing up at TAPS instead of a forever home,” Filley said. “Any donation we get goes directly back to the care that we can give these guys.”

Kroger presented TAPS with a $250 gift card to help the organization provide daily essentials for pets at the shelter.

TAPS is located at 100 TAPS Lane, Pekin.
