Ground was being broken Thursday on a new Target store planned at a $132 million shopping complex in Waukee.

It's part of the planned 62-acre Waukee Towne Center at the intersection of Hickman and Southeast Alice's roads. In addition to the 148,000 square-foot Target store, its anchor tenant, the shopping center will have an array of other retailers, green space and an 8-acre lake, access to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, an amphitheater, and an ice skating rink.

The Target store is the latest major addition to the retail sector in Waukee, which has grown with additions such as the similarly sized Fleet Farm store at Grand Prairie Parkway and Interstate 80 that opened in summer 2020.

Currently, the closest Target locations to Waukee are the Super Targets in West Glen Town Center in West Des Moines and in Urbandale just southeast of the interchange of I-80/35 and Iowa 141.
