Tarrant County defunding Girls Inc. is just the latest way for men to hurt young women | Opinion

Wrong to target Girls Inc.

Day after day, I read stories of men using their fists, blunt objects, guns or whatever is available to harm others. I rarely see stories of women doing the same. Now, Girls Inc. has been defunded in Tarrant County, penalizing young women who badly need help and support. (Oct. 8, 1C, “Tarrant’s Republican men commissioners don’t see women at all”)

Considering there are close to 400 laws on the books in various states regulating what women can and can’t do, this bias is badly misplaced. The people who bring new souls into the world deserve better.

What Judge O’Hare doesn’t know

I challenge Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare to provide specific quotes and examples of the Girls Inc. national group preaching that men can have periods and encouraging children to switch genders. Once again, he embroiders the truth.

The organization is about empowering girls. I saw no mention of men. It also supports LGBTQ teens, as well it should.

Document your objections, Judge O’Hare — if you can. For 47 years, no one saw what you, an extreme conservative, see in the organization.

‘School choice’ helps the rich

Why is Gov. Greg Abbott determined to pass so-called “school choice”?

He’s appeasing donors who want to dismantle public education. Vouchers are a discount coupon for more affluent parents to fund private (primarily Christian) education for their children. Vouchers would benefit only families and private schools in large suburbs, widening the gap with less affluent families and smaller rural districts.

Education Commissioner Mike Morath, an Abbott appointee, is being sued by at least 10 school districts for modifying the accountability grading system. The new system would reflect lower ratings for many campuses and districts, even those with improved performances. The erosion of confidence in public education this creates seems aptly timed.

Think vouchers help Texans? Do your homework.

Fort Worth needs swimming pools

Why does Fort Worth have $31 million to support a development project and many million dollars to build new City Council chambers but not enough money to build and maintain public swimming pools for the benefit of all city residents?

Tucker Carlson over debates

Many Americans seem to agree on one point: The presidential debate format is worthless. No matter how long they go on, they do not help a voter decide.

However, another forum does work. Tucker Carlson’s individual interviews with Donald Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, Mike Pence and others were enough for me to make up my mind. Perhaps another round with a different, antagonistic interviewer would also be exciting. I have watched my last presidential debate.

Not conservative to save Paxton

I commend Marc Levin for his commentary on the importance of the Ken Paxton impeachment regardless of the outcome. (Oct. 8, 23A, “Policing corruption helps drop crime, boost rule of law”)

Although Republican state senators failed to fulfill their duty in standing against corruption, the importance of shining a light on these systematic failures is not lost.

The trial highlighted numerous examples of Republican leaders protecting those who abuse their positions and power. Allowing this corruption to be swept under the rug opens the door to the destruction of trust between the public and a government meant to protect them.

As Levin wrote: “There’s nothing more conservative than exercising vigilance in protecting the rule of law as a shared inheritance, not a perpetual guarantee.”
