Tarrant County reports most COVID-19 deaths since May, nearly 700 new cases

Tarrant County reported 10 COVID-19 deaths and 689 new cases on Friday.

It’s the most pandemic-related deaths since 10 were reported on May 22.

Both those numbers are higher than exactly one year ago when there were eight deaths and 672 new cases reported.

The latest deaths include a Fort Worth woman in her 40s, a Saginaw woman in her 50s, a Fort Worth man in his 50s, two Fort Worth women in their 60s, an Arlington woman in her 60s, a man from rural Tarrant County in his 60s, a River Oaks man in his 60s, a White Settlement man in his 70s, and an Arlington woman in her 80s.

All 10 had underlying health conditions, according to officials.

The county has reported a total of 272,937 COVID-19 cases, including 3,642 deaths and an estimated 260,907 recoveries.

COVID-19 hospitalizations

Hospitalized COVID patients increased by 23 to 549. It’s the most reported since 570 on Feb. 23. The number has been increasing steadily since June 19. The pandemic high was 1,528 on Jan. 6.

COVID-19 hospitalizations increased to 12% from 11% of the total number of beds in Tarrant County and make up 14% of the 3,902 occupied beds. The last time the rate of occupied beds was this high was Feb. 23. The rate was at a pandemic-high 38% on Jan. 10.

Confirmed COVID patients increased to 8.47% from 8.03% of all available hospital beds in the North Central Texas Trauma Region, which includes 45 counties. The rate is the highest since 8.66% on March 2.

Hospital beds

Tarrant County’s hospital bed occupancy decreased to 83% from 86%, according to county data. Available hospital beds increased by 112 to 786. The pandemic low was 615 on Wednesday.

ICU beds

Adult ICU bed occupancy decreased to 91% from 92%. The pandemic high was 99% on Dec. 28.

Ventilator use decreased by six to 203. Patients are using 27% of the 742 ventilators in the county.

Positivity rate

The COVID-19 testing positivity rate for Tarrant County increased to 19.71% from 19.15% in the latest available seven-day average data. It’s the highest rate since it was 20.05% on Jan. 26. The rate was last at a pandemic-high 30% on Jan. 7.

Vaccination data

According to Texas Department of State Health Services, 57.7% of Tarrant County residents 12 or older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 50.4% of residents 12 or older have been fully vaccinated.

DSHS also reports that 84.01% of Tarrant residents 65 or older have received at least one dose, and 77.1% of residents 65 or older have been fully vaccinated.

More than 61.6% of Texas residents 12 or older have received at least one dose, according to DSHS. Fully vaccinated Texas residents 12 or older are at 52.6%.

North Texas COVID-19 hospital capacity

Here is the percent capacity for COVID-19 hospitalizations out of total hospital capacity for the 19-county North Central Texas Trauma Service Area (TSA-E) for the last seven days.
