Members of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force are looking to speak with anyone who witnessed a shootout at Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway on the border of Geneva and Batavia Wednesday afternoon between Kane County sheriff’s deputies and a man police believe was involved in a carjacking in Aurora.

The man was killed in the shootout with police following a pursuit that began in South Elgin Wednesday afternoon, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said.

A Kane County Sheriff’s Office police dog was also killed during the incident after he was deployed when police said they saw the man had a handgun.

Anyone who has information or video related to the incident is asked to call the tip line at 331-385-6314 and leave their name and phone number.

The man allegedly carjacked a Honda Accord at a Jiffy Lube on Orchard Road in Aurora around 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, Kane County Sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies about 30 minutes later spotted the vehicle using license plate readers in South Elgin, officials said.

Deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop but the car did not stop, officials said. They then initiated a pursuit that led from the area of South Elgin and ended at Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway on the border of Geneva and Batavia, where the vehicle was stopped by sheriff’s deputies.

At that point, the man exited the vehicle and “displayed a weapon toward deputies,” sheriff’s officials said. The police dog, named Hudson, was deployed and became involved in “an active struggle” with the man, officials said.

An exchange of gunfire then occurred, Hain said, during which the man and the police dog were shot.

The man was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Authorities have not yet released the man’s name or age.

The police dog also died of its wounds. Sheriff’s deputies gave final honors to the dog Wednesday evening.

The Dutch shepherd was named after an Illinois state trooper who was killed several years ago.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation into the incident.
