Tasty Pastry Bakery celebrates 60th anniversary with cake and friends
On Saturday, April 22, customers and staff celebrated 60 years of the Cross family-owned Tasty Pastry Bakery at 1355 Market St. Opened in 1963 by Mitch and Hortencia Cross, the Tallahassee bakery is now co-owned and operated by their children Mark Cross, Debbie Cross, Brenda O’Kelley, and Michael Cross.
Birthday party attendees included multiple generations of loyal Tasty Pastry customers like mother and daughter Fran Shaw and Carol Moore. “Our family counts on Tasty Pastry Bakery for every holiday, birthday, and anniversary—every celebration! The delicious seven-layer chocolate cake is a staple at our home,” said Fran Shaw. “We love everything about Tasty Pastry, including our wonderful friends!”
The relationships built across the bakery counter are key to what makes Tasty Pastry a community treasure. “We’ve been Tasty Pastry customers for over 25 years. We love not only all of the custom cakes throughout the years but also the relationships made with Deb, Kristina, and Brenda,” said Annie Kelley, who, along with her husband Joe and their three kids, have enjoyed countless Tasty Pastry birthday cakes.
Attendees enjoyed birthday cake, face painting, and photo opportunities with Spiderman, along with a special giveaway to the 60th customer of the day.
“It was a true pleasure to see so many familiar faces today,” said Mark Cross, co-owner of Tasty Pastry Bakery. “Tasty Pastry has not only been a staple of our lives but has been a constant in the lives of many Tallahassee families. Watching families grow and introduce the next generation to Tasty Pastry Bakery is a joy we couldn’t have anticipated 30 years ago.”
Unlike 20 percent of local businesses negatively affected by the pandemic, Tasty Pastry Bakery thrived thanks to the rally of support from the Tallahassee community.
A lot has changed in the past 60 years. But at Tasty Pastry Bakery, the recipes are still the same, the Cross family is still at the helm, and the treats still taste like grandma made them.
