Tate County residents search for answers after Dollar General closes

TATE COUNTY, Miss. — Folks in one Tate County, Mississippi community are looking for answers after their local Dollar General store has been closed for more than a week.

Wanda McKinnon lives next door to the Dollar General store on Arkabutla Road in Tate County. She is more than anxious to know why the store is closed. The windows are covered with black plastic and the parking lot is roped off.

“You know there’s something going on,” she said. “Everybody wants answers. It’s been closed for a week and no one has had answers.”

Donna Ashcraft, another Dollar General regular, shares the same concerns.

“We come up about a week ago to go in and purchase some items from the Dollar General here and it said they were closed for maintenance,” she said.

According to McKinnon, workers wearing white hazmat-type suits have been in and out of the store, sparking concerns of some sort of infestation. But on Wednesday, no one at the business would verify or comment on why the store was closed.

McKinnon is concerned about health issues and has complained before about what she calls messy conditions around the store’s dumpster.

“It’s horrendous. It’s terrible. I’m surprised it’s not filled with snakes,” she said.

We reached out to Dollar General about the closure and were told, “At Dollar General, when we learn of maintenance or repair needs in or around our stores, we take prompt action to directly, or in partnership with our landlord partners, address concerns in a timely manner. Depending on the issue, this process may take hours or days. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

Customers are encouraged to shop at one of the Dollar General locations in Coldwater or Strayhorn.
