Taunton's Old Colony History featured on TV's 'Treasures Inside the Museum.' How to watch

TAUNTON — Taunton's own Old Colony History Museum is featured on an episode of the Rhode Island public television show "Treasures Inside the Museum."

WSBE-TV spokesman Faythann Fallon said the episode describes how the Old Colony History Museum “chronicles the long history of southeastern Massachusetts, including a military collection, paintings and textiles.”

Old Colony History Museum Executive Director Katie MacDonald said descriptions of the museum’s objects were highlighted by herself, museum President William Hanna, Curator of Collections Bronson Michaud and Renee Walker-Tuttle.

The episode on the Old Colony History Museum premieres on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and will be rebroadcast Friday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 14 at noon. It will also be available to view on the Rhode Island PBS website as of Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m..

Show highlights Old Colony History Museum’s military room

MacDonald said the "Treasures Inside the Museum" episode focuses mainly on the museum’s military room, which is undergoing renovations.

“We are obviously excited,” she said, adding that the episode was filmed in March.

MacDonald said the military room highlights how Southeastern Massachusetts was impacted by the Revolutionary War and all of the wars that the U.S. has participated in.

“They came in at a great time,” she said of the "Treasures Inside the Museum" taping. “We talked about a number of things related to military history.”

The story of Taunton resident David Cobb, who served in the Continental Army as a major general during the Revolutionary War and suffered the loss of an arm when he got hit by a British cannonball, was detailed.

“It’s a great local story,” she said, adding that the museum has a preserved portrait of him that will be installed in the military room.

Museum officials also discussed how Taunton resident and World War II Army veteran Henry F. McKenney was stationed in a war crimes courtroom at Nuremberg, Germany.

MacDonald said the renovations inside the military room are nearing completion, and it should open in November or December.

Treasures Inside the Museum offers 'backstage look at amazing places'

Rhode Island PBS President David W. Piccerelli said the "Treasures Inside the Museum" program is beginning its fourth broadcast season and the show offers viewers “a backstage look at amazing places not far from their own homes.”

“We are excited to see what season four uncovers and to shine a light on the local organizations preserving these histories,” he said in a written statement.

Upcoming episodes feature: Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, Connecticut; East Greenwich Veteran Fireman’s Museum in Warwick, Rhode Island; The Providence Art Club; Watch Hill Lighthouse Museum, in Westerly, Rhode Island; The John Brown house museum, in Providence; St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island; Wayside Inn Museum, in Sudbury, Massachusetts; Nathaniel Green Homestead in Coventry, Rhode Island; Paine House Museum, in Coventry, Rhode Island; and the Attleboro Industrial Museum.

How to watch

New episodes of "Treasures Inside the Museum" air Sundays at 7 p.m., and the shows are re-broadcast Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at noon.

Viewers can also watch "Treasures Inside the Museum" on WSBE’s website at https://watch.ripbs.org/video/old-colony-museumclouds-hill-house-museum-oqmnik.

The episode on the Old Colony History Museum will premiere Sunday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and be available to watch on the website at that same time.
