Tax bills seek to collect $327.9 million in total county, city taxes

The Rutherford County Trustee’s Office will send out property taxes the first week of October.

The taxes collected from property owners and mortgage companies provide much of the funding to operate government and public education services from Rutherford County and the cities within the county.

The trustee staff collects property taxes for the county, Smyrna and Eagleville, while Murfreesboro and La Vergne collect taxes for their cities. The trustee office is on the first floor of the Rutherford County Courthouse in the center of Murfreesboro’s historic downtown area. The address is 1 S. Public Square, Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

The Rutherford County Courthouse sits in the middle of the historic square on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

2022 property tax rates for the county and cities are listed at the bottom of this story.

County property taxpayers have until the end of February to pay their bills without being charged late interest fees of 1.5% per month on the bill. Smyrna, La Vergne and Eagleville have the same deadline to pay the taxes as the county. Murfreesboro property owners have until the end of December without paying similar interest fees.

The tax bills are based on appraisal of property and property assessment values from the staff of Rutherford County Property Assessor Rob Mitchell. The total value of all appraisals within the county is about $55 billion.

The combined county and city taxes total about $327.9 million.

The total county taxes from real estate and personal property is $239.5 million.

The total property taxes for the cities combined (Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne and Eagleville) is nearly $88.4 million.

Assessments are 25% of property appraisal value for residential property and 40% for commercial property.  The assessment value times the property tax rate for the county and the cities determines the bills.

The county has 121,939 real estate parcels and 15,615 accounts for personal property that are taxed, according to the assessor’s office.

The total of mailed bills is 75,756.

Mortgage companies are handling tax bills for 59,279 accounts.
